Car Key Cutting Explained

Car key cutting is much more than just shaping a piece of metal. It is a complicated procedure that ensures safety, functionality and durability of keys.

It is not uncommon to lose your car keys or have it break off in the lock. To ensure you're able to always drive your vehicle, you will need a new key cut.

Transponder Keys

Transponder chips are likely be fitted in vehicles built within the past 20 years. These chips are small microchips inside the key's handle which transmit an electronic signal to the car's onboard computer when you use it. The onboard computer reads the digital serial number inside the chip and allows the car to start if it's the right one. This prevents thieves from taking over your vehicle since they'd need to be aware of the unique serial number.

The microchip in your car key sends a low-level radio signal to the car's receiver. This radio signal activates your microchip which then transmits code to the computer onboard of the car. The car will only begin if it recognizes this code. This stops the use of "hot wiring" and other methods of taking cars.

Locksmiths who provide these services can design keys for cars with chips. Some car dealers, like AutoZone sell them. Those stores carry a huge variety of keys and can assist you in choosing the appropriate one for your vehicle. They can help you program your car's chip which is needed to use the device.

Laser cut keys are more secure than flat keys. These keys feature a lock cylinder that is more difficult to pick, and can only be duplicated using expensive laser key cutting machines or specialized software. This technology is most common in high-end vehicles, but is now available on a variety of affordable models.

The VATS (vehicle-anti-theft system) key is another type of key that's difficult to duplicate. These keys have a black resistor on the blade of the key that is programmed with one of 15 possible values to stop them from starting a car that it's not designed to. They are expensive and require an instrument for programming keys, which is only available through certain locksmiths.

VATS Keys

Before the advent of transponder keys and automobiles equipped with computer chips to control the ignition of a car, GM used something called VATS (Vehicle Anti-Theft System). VATS uses a key with an embedded resistor to ensure that the correct key was used to start the car. The VATS black pellet that is in the center of a VATS key is not an electronic chip as used in modern smart keys. It is simply a piece of carbon appropriately sized to have a specific electrical resistance value.

GM employed 15 different resistances for the VATS Pellets and attached them to key blades in a way that, when the key is turned on, the key blades transmit a coded message to the module. If the signal is in line with the resistance value of the transistor in the VATS pellet, the relay in the starter circuit is activated and the engine starts to run. This does not make a car secure from burglary however, it can deter the thief for a minimum of fifteen to twenty minutes.

Unfortunately, after a significant amount of use, the VATS module in your car may begin to wear out. Each time a key is inserted into the ignition, it moves two tiny wires inside the ignition, and with time, the wires could begin to break. Once enough wires break the signal to the module gets not received and it will not start the car.

You can solve this issue at home yourself by decoding your VATS code. You'll require a multimeter as well as a chart to determine the resistance value of your key, but it's not difficult at all. All you have to do is place one of the leads of your ohm gauge on the prongs made of metal visible on both sides of the key, then examine the display of your ohm meter to find out the resistance value of your key.

This method is also a good way to test a new key to see if it will work in your car. Remove the ignition key first before you test it. If not the key may have an incorrect VATS and will not function in your vehicle.

Smart Key Fobs for Keys

Key fobs today can do more than just unlock or start the vehicle. They can also be an alarm system and a burglar deterrent, with a lot of them incorporating advanced features that owners may not be aware of. They can remotely lock and unlock your doors, make sounding sounds to help find your car in a parking space, or even allow you to summon your vehicle by pressing the button on your phone. This is a lot more features than you get from a traditional keychain remote. Unfortunately, all that added capabilities also means that smart key fobs could be more expensive to replace than standard keychain remotes, and they usually need to be programmed by the dealer.

Some dealers will charge up to $100 for one smart fob. It's a steep price to pay for a device that is often jostled in purses and pockets in the event that it gets damaged, thrown or exposed to extreme temperatures and water. Fortunately there are automakers who have developed methods to shield smart key fobs from common types of electronic attacks like relay attacks. These are often utilized in conjunction with remote-start hacks that allow thieves to access the settings of your vehicle by sending a fake signal from another nearby transmitter.

To protect a smart fob, you can store it in a metal casing or even an RFID blocking case. This will prevent the transmission of these signals. However, having to remove the key fob from a protective case each time you want to use it is not a good way to enjoy the benefits of the technology.

Fortunately, a few of the latest car insurance policies and auto club memberships and extended warranty coverage will cover the cost of replacing a fob or pay for the loss of a fob. You can also save money on new car dealer charges and have your fob cut at a hardware store or locksmith key cutting which offers key-fob cloning.

For the majority of drivers who are buying an extra key fob will depend on the importance of your car's keyless entry and push button starter functions are. Always keep a spare key or fob on hand in case you misplace yours. If you do need to purchase a new car key cut replacement, Batteries Plus has a wide selection of fobs for the majority of vehicles and trucks. Additionally, our fast and easy service is about 50% less than what you'd spend at the dealership.

Traditional Keys

The traditional car key is made of a single piece of steel with a series of grooves carved into it. These grooves are designed to fit specific locks. They can unlock your locks and open the car, as long as you haven't changed them out for a smart key or remote key. The only downside of using an old-fashioned car key is that you need to physically insert it into the ignition to start the engine. If your traditional key has been lost, damaged or stolen, you'll need to visit the Gainesville locksmith to have an alternative one made from the blank.

There are several choices to pick from based on how long it's been since you've were able to cut your keys. Some keys use mechanical cutting machines to create copies, whereas others use laser-cut keys that have been made with security features in mind.

Modern keys are equipped with advanced features such as encryption and anti-theft mechanisms. The encryption makes it difficult for thieves to duplicate keys or open locks. Transponder chips are an additional anti-theft feature. They are embedded into the key and connect to your vehicle. This means that it can only work only when you're within a specific distance.

If you decide to use a traditional key, your locksmith can make an entirely new key using a standard cutter machine that can be bought from a variety of hardware stores. This is cheaper than a key fob, or a transponder. you are still able to operate your trunk locks, trunk locks, and doors.

You can also replace your traditional car keys with a laser-cut version that has an unique pattern. These keys were first introduced in the 1990s, and they're a popular choice for those looking to provide extra security to their automobiles. laser car key cutting service near me cut keys are usually equipped with transponder chips that are programmed to work only with your vehicle. If these chips are not present in your vehicle, they will not respond to the signals transmitted by the key.Hyundai.jpg
